My dear Sir,
When I had last the pleasure of
your company here, (I think it was last Saturday sennight),
in obedience to the desire you then expressed, I foreinised
to you for the purpose which you mentioned
namely that of a present to the Museum in Philadelphia
a portion of small piece of the materials of a house now belonging to me & seen by

The circumstance which gave rise to a desire which
without explanation would appear so singular is that the house
is one of those perhaps the only one recorded
as having had Milton for its inhabitant. At the very
time when this promise was made, already I meditated

of it to the imagination. A brick is even to
a proverb an uncharacteristic representative
