Emancipation Spanish

+ Bronella 2d 20

Summary

§.7. The dominion relinquished, the advantage to Spain from a connection
with Spanish America, would be great and smal peculiar.

Well then, from the dominion in question, whether
actually retained, or in vain endeavoured to be retained, what
advantages have we seen? none in any shape: none to either hemisphere.
On the contrary, suffering in sad plenty: suffering, in
every imaginable shape: except always to the ruling few, who,
whatsoever enjoyment from the unnatural union advantage they see for
themselves from so unnatural a union, know better than to acknowledge it. From Spanish
America, kept under the yoke, nothing but suffering on
either side. From Spanish America, free from the yoke, what
then is to be expected? Turn to the Royal Proclamation — to that
very Proclamation by which those immense regions are called
upon to submitt to that same yoke;[+]1 instrument that
gave to this humble representative authority
could not have been wished for on the ground of the
authority, behold what a constellation of advantages! advantages
:
"language, religion,
laws, customs" — all the same. Here are bands of sympathy!
Consider well all these identities. Look, what surges of sympathy! Look, what
here are bonds of connection! not to speak of
with the exception of religion which the operation of which extends to Catholic nations[+]2

Now then, with such advantages — in your
dealings with these your kinsmen, such matchless and indelible
advantages over every other nation under the sun Spaniards
what more could you have? Bad indeed must be your goods,
if, by your kindred in the other hemisphere these your kinsmen, in the quality of customers, the preference is
not given to them those same goods, above those of all other nations. Bad indeed
your goods: not to speak of the persons of those who have them to sell dispose of.

Here than, have advantages in
here, than you will have money flowing in to you
and without penal laws for conduct to it: conduct which

"virtues": a topic which
in the extract thus made
from it I had actually
struck out of the list,
regarding it as amounting
to nothing, and the mention
of it as having no better
warrant than vanity and
rhetorical adulation, when
a passage, I accidentally
met with in Townsend,
at once gave a determinate
meaning to it, and
shewed to me that on
this head silence would
not accord with justice.
(Townsend II. 353) "Simplicity,
"sincerity, generosity,

"honour," are the virtues
particularized by him
in so many words: but the value of the testimony can not be any thing like adequately appretiated without the entire passage, and thus a little further you shall have.
