Bogota Octr. 17th 1822

10 Jany 1823 Copied from the torn envelope as follows. Letter will reach me, directed
Colonel Wall, Caracas. To the care of Messrs Rotgers and Ursinus, St. Thomas
This was all? Tamaqua 18 Novr was on one of the Postmarks.

My dear Sir

It gave me sincere pleasure on my arrival
here about three weeks ago, to receive a Letter and parcel
from you through M. Gual, The Secretary for foreign affairs. The Interest you are kind enough to feel in my
destiny emboldens me so far to play the Egotist as to
give you a brief sketch of the cause I have run in this
Country. – After remaining some months in Barranquilla
With Genl. D'Evereux, I joined the Expedition against St. Mark's
and after the capture of this place, travelled through the
interior of the Country to join Bolivar at Varinas, previous
to the Campaign of 1821. Bolivar received me very handsomely
and appointed me Chief of the Topographical Department
on the General Staff of the Army. After the action of
Carabobo, I went to Caracas, with a commission to
survey that part of the Country. During the period of
my residence in Caracas I formed the Plan of setting
up a Newspaper in Spanish and English, with the double

Consequence as are directing their speculations to
this hemisphere – I am promised, but have not yet the
replies. When I get them I shall endeavour to bring
the subject before the English public. You have done
my crude sketch of Canadian Politicks too much honor
by praising and publishing it; but for this, as for the many
other marks of your favor and esteem.
