J.B. to Bolisar for Miranda
Jeremy Bentham to Simon Bolivar
Liberator of Columbia.

Sir,
Leander Miranda will be the bearer of
this letter. His name will of course suffice to ensure at
your hands, all such kind attentions as his disposition and
acquirements may shew that he is qualified for receiving: but
the anxiety he solicitude for him expressed, to he the bearer of a few lines to
you from me has been such, that, after seeing what I have seen of him,
and hearing what from good judges I have heard of concerning
him, I could not leave it ungratified unsatisfied. The function he is
gone to excercise, or at least to endeavour to exercise, under
the protection of your laws I mean that of the Editor of
a Newspaper is one, especially in a rising country such
as yours, to the importance of which you cannot but be
fully sensible. Of his qualifications for it, as he has never
yet had the opportunity of exercising it, I can speak
no otherwise than from anticipation: and from all circumstances
taken together, it the anticipation cannot be otherwise than
favourable. The moral part of his character is, from every
thing that I have been able to hear, altogether spotless. As
to the intellectual part, if what I have heard from himself
and Mr Mill, is true, I am enabled, and in point of
justice compelled to sign a his certificate in the character of a
disciple of mine my own. Mr Mill has assured me that such of
my works, as by the favour of M. Dumont are in french,
have been read by him: such of those in english such as seemed
to afford a chance of being of use where he is going I have
given him copies of. Mr Mill and I have joined in the recommendation
of most of the other books he takes with him.
By the kindness of an old friend of his father's Lady
Esther Stanhope daughter of the late Earl Stanhope &
