1823 Jan. 10
J.B. to Col. Hall Columbia, by Mr Leander Meads

1

Who ended Jany 11

Dear Sir Queen Lynn Place Westmr 10 Jany 1823

M Miranda being on the point of setting
out on his Newspaper editing expedition to Bogota, I will not let
slip this opportunity of thanking you for your letter
of the October which I received through our
post this day sennight on Saturday last the 4th instant
A light back as it furnished me with was not to be had
under a bushel, The single our common friend Bingham
I sent it to your friend Empson by whom I had been
favoured with the communication of one of yours to him.
Upon drawing The mention it made in it of the loan without any
change of setting, I could do no otherwise than send it
to my friend Bowring whose name and character can not
but by in this be known to you. He himself had no
interest in it: but his friend Sir Robt Wilson having
to his knowledge unburdened largely in it, at his earnest
desire I had communication on the subject with Sir Robert.
He had indeed a considerable sum in it for which he had
paid he told me at the rate of 84 for the 100: but such was the
his confidence in the honour of your government that he
would not sell out though he might have done so at
no more than 14 per Cent. loss. Bowring, when he
wrote to me to the above effect was that there was at that
time no letter to the same effect as Yours. But
in the next Newspaper the whole matter came out fully, by the publication of Mr Guals letter
to Zea

in the Times
On my sending your letter across my garden for to
my Elica the Editor of the Traveller I found heard afterwards he had misconceived
me and insisted more or less of it: but he is a
discreet young man, and I would take care I am assured
that
that the author
should not be perceptible
