1823. Oct.r 30. (Copy.) 1.

M.r James Bevans to J.B. Sharpe Esq—Buenos Ayres 12th Jan.y 1823.

Respected Friend,

I take the opportunity of a hot
day which prevents much moving about to write
thee a few lines. We rather calculated upon seeing
thee at Blackwall before our departure, but in
that we were not gratified. After a tedious passage
we arrived off this city on the 1.st of November, which
being a close holiday, we were obliged to remain
on board till the 2,d, when we got safe on shore
we put up at an Hotel kept by an Englishman,
where we were pretty comfortably accommodated.
Just now, a gentleman called in and kept me in
conversation till dinner time—so I now begin again
19th of 1st Month 1823—We were at the Hotel for
20 days: I was disappointed in not having any thing
allowed towards my passage out, but the refusal was
accompanied with a promise that my salary sh.d
be raised: when that will take place I know not
but I hope to know shortly. We have taken a House,
but it was under repair, and we were obliged to
live in three rooms, and these in a dirty condition,
whilst the other parts of the House were repairing:
we have been getting possession of room after room,
and I hope in another week to get rid of the Workmen,
so that we are not yet quite settled. There
are a great many English here—I should think
not less than 2,000: the higher class appear to be
amongst the most respectable inhabitants of the
City, but the lower order are a disgrace to their Country.
We live in the Wapping of Buenos Ayres, but
with us it was Hobson's choice—there was no other
House to be got, and it is very handy the
and as my offices are attached to the House, it was necessary
not be far off. Buenos Ayres is a very
lively place, and the Houses have a much better
appearance than I had calculated on: they are
generally built with very thick walls, lofty ceilings,
and large window openings; but all the windows
secured
