1823. Octr. 29 Mr. James Bevans to J.B. Sharpe Esq— Buenos Aryes 31st Jan. 1823.
But persons who try experiments must make
shift: if we can not grind it we must pound
it. I understand the blue clay which shaw gave
to me, is to be procured about the mouth of the ri—ver
Chouela. I spent a day at a cottage built by a
gentleman, about 5 miles from the city where he
has a salting house for salting beef: he kills a—bout
70 or 80 heads of cattle a day, and all the beef,
free from bone, is in salt by night: he does conde
send to salt the tongues, but the hearts and all
the rest of the offal is thrown into the river as food
for fishes: the heads and bones serve for feud for
brick and lime burning then came home in the
evening in a boat down the river Chuela, and
from the winding of the river the distance was
increased between 8 and 9 miles: the the ride
was a most delightful one. The banks of the river
were frequently covered with trees and shrubs.
There was an appearance on the sand banks,
which appeared very curious: the sand appeared
to from itself into tall cones of iron land stone
round the blades of grass or twigs: some of them
are about a foot in height, and 2 inches in dia—meter—
I brought some home with me, but although
exposed to the sun and air, they do not appear to
get much harder. I supposed it to be occasioned
by there being iron in the water: but we happened
to go on shore on some of the highest ground, where
the soil was sandy, and some ditches had been
lately cut, and there I found the same kind of
formation, only they were not more than 1/4 of an
inch in diameter, and much harder. I am very
busy contriving a harbour built in the inner roads in the
deep water off the bull ring, with a bridge of 3 1/2
furlongs to it, to form a reservoir for the land wa—ter,
which comes down a little stream shown
in the map of the city, not far from the bull ring,
