1823. Octr. 31. Mr. James Bevans to J.B. Sharpe esq.— Buenos Ayres Feby. 16. 1823
and other beautiful birds. We did not see a ser—
pent during the whole of our visit, and if there
had been any, some one would most likely have
met our eyes, during our rambles. On the whole,
we were much delighted with the excursion: I
was accompanied by two of my countrymen,
one a chemist, the other a carpenter, and a young
native who is in my office. Over great curiosity
is not a facet of this country. It was a schooner
of this country which was ordered to convey us to the
islands and a native crew, who were constantly
laughing at our bringing pieces of stone on board,
and sometimes they would point to a quantity of
stone in the hold of the vessel, which was there for
ballast: implying that we might get more there.
We are all well in health, as I hope all our friends
in London are. I have received a letter containing
90 words from Francis Place, for which I was obliged, but
think he might have given me more information, if he
had added 1000 more words to it. Thou will oblige me by
showing him this letter, and mean to make it a little
longer than his was. Perhaps Shaw will also show it
to my brother John, who lives no. 2. Star court Bread
street. The guns of the fort have just been returning
a salute from a French man of war. My wife desires
her respects to thee: she has almost forgiven thee for
mentioning the situation to us—
From thy very respectful friend
(Signed.) James Bevans.
