1823. Octr. 31. Extract of a letter from Mr. Bevan to Mr. Place, dated Buenos Ayres
Feby. 23d. 1823.

... I learnt before I left London that the ship
builder's charge for building steam boats was
eight pounds per ton: perhaps Shaw can inform
me more particularly on the subject. Jeremy
Bentham has been sending a long letter to this
government to compound and upset the govern—ment interpreters: he had better have his next
interpreted into English before he sends it. There
is one of Mr. Burgesses carriages for running
against the mail, sent out here for sail. What ever the government of this country may un—dertake,
I am of opinion that they must
wholly depend upon the foreign workmen for the ex—cecution,
how they are to be obtained, nothing can be done,
for they are lazy beyond definition, and you
might as well attempt to move the andes out
of their place, as a native out of his habits. The
natives care nothing for the future generations;
so long as they feel comfortable, they leave the
next generation to take care of themselves. I am
sure some families spend more money in
shoes alone, than would make their grandchil—dren
persons of very large property, provided the
money was judicially laid out in land: it is a
common habit for each female in a family to
lay out two dollars each per week, and some
families, the females, lay out six dollars per head each week: can this be called by any other
name than profuse extravagance.

10th of 3rd. month. I understand a Brigg sails
for England tomorrow— I must therefore con—clude
this letter—
