Rio Hacha March 27. 1823.

Yesterday, my dear Empson, I received your two let
ters, with several others, forwarded through Bentham, to
whom I am much indebted as well for procuring me
this pleasure, as for his inflexibility in preserving me in
the number of the living. The voice of our kind though
distant friends is indeed a musich which stirs a thou—sand
memories, as well as provoked a thousand anticipa—tions.
Faney expatiates on nothing more willingly than the
advancement we hope one day to witness of the friends
of our happiest days, and the companions of our earliest
labours. Shall we not hereafter listen to the
delivering oracles from the woolsack, oracles both in depths
and darkness? The placid Wrightson shall quietly display
his budget of ways and means, convinced from his own
feelings, that the nation is both flourishing and happy—
but what destiny shall we assign to the brilliant and
penetrating vice, an Irish patriot, and incorruptible?
Truly I fear he must be content with posthumous fame,
or with being stuffed and placed in a museum, as a
Lusus naturae. Its for you, my dear friend, I am afraid
you have in your composition a philosophical haven,
an adhesion to national comfort, and social equipment,
most unfavourable to legal advancement. The most law—yer
like point about you is your handwriting, which
I am thankful a long acquaintance still enables me
to decipher, notwithstanding the portentous increase of
it's contortions and abbreviations. As for myfuture destiny,
if you can decipher it from the horoscope of my present
situation, which I am about to present to your so merrily
to work. If you have received my letters from Bogatou or
Santa Fie, you are aware that I was summoned in
haste from Caracau thither, about 1,000 unites, as it sh.
Seem by a mistake. The vicepresident stoutly denying the
order, which the Public insisted on believing had been pro—duced
by the Anglo—columbian. At any rate, I was in Santa
Fei, and without lots of time received an order to join
