1823. Octb 21. Constitut. code J.B. to Hon. l. Stanhope Ancona
to these points I make such shifts as I can:
sending in bits & scraps of exposition & reason giving in
form, as I can get them up. In some instances perhaps
an informal succedent in the shape of an abridgement:
in some instances for want of complements of the matter
& time for effecting the separation in appropriate form
I may have recourse to the expedient of mixing up
matter that belongs to exposition or patronal, or both
with matter, that with propriety belongs exclusively to
the enactive part: viz in the same selection: or perhaps in
the same Article.
Supporting adequate encouragement for caution—ing.
Such is my sense of the pressingness of the need of
the penal & how penal codes, procedure included, that
I suspect that to proceed upon them with the more
dispatch & I feel myself under the necessity of turning
over my mass of papers belonging to the exposition &
rational of the present code into other hands, to be
provisionally put in order & published by those same
other hands, saving to myself the expectation of putting
them into order in my own way, should I survive the
completion of the now penal and penal codes.
I accept the the serene expulsion of my gratitude
for that part of myyour letter in which I am mentioned & the
successful labours therein spoken of.
Think of the perplexity I am continually enveloped
in by the complete absence of real data.
