1823. Novr. 20. Col. Stanhope to Mr. Bowring, Milan 25. Octr. 1823

be introduced into the Quotidien: also, that a
selection should be made of the great events
recorded in Grecian annals, that they should be
narrated in plain language, and published in a
series of letters in the newspapers, for the infor—mation
of the people.

I asked Monsr. M how the military
chiefs should be rendered subservient to the go—vernment?
He said, by the latter acting virtuous—ly
and deserving the confidence of people;
and by a loan, which would enable the state to
pay and reward honourable services.

This gentlemen suggests that a so—ciety
and a museum should be formed in
Greece. By them, all records and antiquities
should be preserved, and every event of Im—portance
registered. Pray favour me with in—formation
and instructions on this subject. I
think Mr. Hobhouse and Mr. Foster of Liver—pool
should be consulted.

The chevalier is of the opinion that a
Greek committee might be formed at Florence
I told him I much feared that such generous
spirits would not breathe in the Beotian at
mosphere of the Holy Alliance. They and those
they succoured, would immediately be convert—ed
by the three great Majicians into Carbonari.

I start from here tomorrow. At
Bologna, at Florence and at Pisa, I have to con—fer
with men of eminence.

In this letter I have purposely avoid
ed mentioning names.

I am, Yours

(signed) Leicester Stanhope

P.S. I waited two days after my business was
completed at Geneva, in the hope of receiving
Mr Bentham's manuscript. It came not, and
I very reluctantly departed without it. I have
directed it to be sent after me by the post, &
have also spoken about it to Mr.Dumont.
