1823. Novb. 5. Pisa. Greece. Hon. Col. Leicester Stanhope to John Bowring esq.

never could the interest of England to
increase that vast empire vy adding to her
wealth and raising her into a great naval
power

There is a report here that Ld Byron
has offered to raise & maintain 500 men.

Bentham's words are much admired
on the continent. The professor of law here
Carminiani is of this mind.

At the college of Bologna none but
the Greeks and foreigners are allowed to
read this author.

I wish you wd. get Buckingham to
publish trust versus ashurst in his new
journal. No one that reads it can stick
to the sophistries of Blackstone. And in
Bh. India where a great revolution in
the laws must take place it wd. be of
paramount importance that men sd.
understand what a demon they have
bowed to & glorified.

I expect to be at Ancoma on the 17th Feb.

Yours sincerely

(signed) Leicester Stanhope

+ this will be still more the
case in the next generation.
