Hon. Col. Leicester Stanhope to John Bowring esq. Aneona 11 novr. 1823. (Copy) Original recovered Dec 12. 1823.

Dear Bowring

There is settled in Aneona an intel—ligent
Greek of the name of Jean Mela, who has a bro—ther
at Corfu. He has promised me to send you an
account of the news that may reach him from Greece,
and a fair statement of all acts of maladministrati—on
in the Lenion Isles. Monsr. Mela gave me the
following information derived from a letter writ
ten by a respectable merchant at Sira. The Turks
have lately put in motion two strong columns.
One from Sarifisa which directed it's march towards
Thermopylee, has been dispersed by Ulysses, and has
returned to Zetuna. The other Turkish column, un—der
the Pacha of Sentard, marched against Messalun
gra.
After much skirmishing, in which fell the
famous captaine Mareus Bazzar, and after the
Turks had actually commenced the assault they were
repulsed with considerable loss. Ten Greek ships were
prepared to sail towards Messalungra, to attack
the Turkish fleet of 15 ships. Nine Greek vessels were
assailed near Santo Monte by six Turkish leigates and
seven corvets. Other ships of the combatants were in
sight, but would not take part in the action. Both
received great damage without any decisive advantage
having been gained by either, except the glory obtain—ed
by the lesser fleet. The Greek navy consists of
52 vessels, which are principally stationed off the
island of Sebriattra in the Greko—Polags. The Turkish
fleet is near Lerrnos and Mitelene. The Greek goven
ment is about to move from Salemena to Napoli
Romania, all differences concerning that fortress
having been settled.

The following are the contents of a letter
from Fante of the 10 Octr. 1823. Mysalungia is blockaded
by 12,000 Albanians, and another army of 4,000 is at
Castros, about 8 from this fortress. The Greeks
have 8,000 men at Messalungra, and expect further
reinforcements from the Morea. Ten Greek ships
are also said to have reached Messalungia.
