Hon.Col. Leicester Stanhope to John Bowring esq
has generously advanced £4,000 towards the payment
of the armament. The money is placed in the
hands of three Commissioners. The Turkish Army
before Missolonghi are said to be moving off by hundreds.
I rejoice to tell you that Bills to
the amount of £20,000 have not been accepted
Constantinople. Now you are aware that Patras,
the Castle of Morea & Lepanto have hitherto been
supplied through this source, and that from these
fortresses was supplied the army before Missolonghi.
Hence we may conclude that the port has no money,
that the troops must abandon the sieges
of Missolonghi, and that Patras, the Castle of the Morea,
and Lepanto being merely exhausted by the supplies
they have afforded, and having no English consul to give
them further succorer, must soon fall. The following
scratch will give you an idea of Patras.
The Castle of the & the castle of Rumilia which are
the gates of the gulf of Lefranto, are easily taken. so is Lepanto
tho' stronger than the others. you were wise in not sending the
to Napoli. I have written to Corfu to desire to
proceed to Cefelonia with the stores of the stone&, there to
receive further orders. Should Missolonghi be in security, that
will probably become our Head Quarters for the present. I
have been seriously ill, I am now convalescent of
seeing to proceed to Napoli
to endeavour by silky words & appalling facts, to
the Executive of Legislation Bodies. After this, call it vain, attempt
to all return to Missolonghi there to labor under in the
