1824 Feby. 2d Copy Hon. Col. Leicester Stanhope to John Bowring esq. dated Messalongie 23d. Decr. 1823

then proceeds to blockade Patras, under the command
of Collocotroni. Probably they came to present Adria
Zaimi, and Andrai Londos from their intention to
blockade Patras.

The legislative body is said to be at Grenada.
If so, they have resorted to that place to deliberate in se—
curity, and to be near Spagia: they have acted wisely.

A public meeting was held at the church of the Spi—
ridate, at Messalongie. The object was, to choose 4 ma—
gistrates. The Prince Mavrocordato read to them his
credentials, by which it appeared that the legislative and
executive bodies had appointed him president of the
legislative body, and civil and military governor
of western Greece. By which is meant Sivadia. The
aristocracy endeavoured to have the 4 members elect—
ed from their body, pretending that they were wiser
and knew the customs and business better than the
plebians. The people on the other hand contended
that they coned select persons equal to the duties, and
who would not betray their liberties. The result was
that two of the primates, and two of the people were
elected.

The press is not yet in motion. I will
explain to you the reason. When I arrived here, I
found that Mo. had brought a press with him, and
that Dr. Mo. had undertaken to conduct it. I imme—
diately endeavoured to rouse the several persons
concerned to commence the work. A thousand absla—
class were thrown in the way, and endless causes of
delay were adduced. At last, a house was procured.
A prospectus partly written by Dr. M. partly by me,
was prepared, a list of the principal primates
captain and of the members of three parishes
& was collected by me, and a circular letter
ready to forward to them. In short, when I
thought the matter was actually printed, the
redacteur declared that the language of the
