1824. Feby 2nd. Hon. Col. Leicester Stanhope to John Bowring esq. dated Missalongi 23d decr 1823.
Prospectus was not good, that had received one
from the Prince that was all excellent, and in
short that he would not paint the prospects.
Much well that he is the only pointer here. I
rated him rudely. I asked him whether he wished
to establish an inquisition in Greece; and thatwhat
prince M who was the idol of the people, the gove—nor
they had forced the executive to adopt, the pre—sident
of the representatives of the people
say, if he heard that he had acted so lately. He
shuffled, and agreed to publish what Dr M had
written, but said that the translation from Bentham
was not in good Greek. I blew him up again and
he yielded. Since then, the Prince has called upon
me. I told him how infamously the redacteur had
behaved, and all I had said to him. He replied that
he was sorry to hear it; that the man had brought
him the prospectus, but that he had not read it, I
that according to the constitution he was free to pub—lish

here to metntion to you, that during this most

immortal Bentham. I told the secretary that
contracts were sacred things, and if broken in one instance what security was there for
loan, and the expected English loan the high and
rude tone in these two affairs, produced the desired
result. And I feel proud that in Greece as in
Indastan, I have contributed to the first establishment
of a few press. There was a press indeed at Calama
tra, but it was under Ypsilanti, and there was
