1824. Feby. 2d. Hon. Col. Leicester Stanhope to John Bowring esq. dated Missolongie 23d Dec 1823.

one at Corinth for registering acts and proclama
lions.

Posts. I have addressed the Govr. . on this subject,
and have offered to undertake the enterprize
from Napoli to Argos, Tripoliza & thence
and Gastonia. This will be the means of circulating
letters from the Monea to the islands and to England.
It is essential to the circulation of newspapers.
I shall this night submit my plan to a committee
of Greeks.

Committees. I have got a list of the best men in
Messalongie, and shall endeavour to from school &
hospital and other committees.

Hospital. I have offered the prince to establish
me, and he has agreed to the terms. The Govr. finds
a house, 3 servants, beds &c.; I shall furnish medicines
for which the upper and middle class are to pay
in such proportions as to remunerate me in
time. Pray send out medicines, surgical instru
ments, blankets §

Schools. I have written to an American missionary
at Malta and to an English one at Corfu to a
Greece with school masters, books, bibles,
medicines, presses, §

Reconnoissance. By my advice, the prince has
sent Rinderman to reconnoitre Lapanto. He will
blockade, besiege or assault it.

Agents. I wish you would come to Greece, or if
this is impossible, sent out Brown, Blaysguiere
or Gordon, or one or two doing men if they have
money all the better. I shall endeavour to set cap
tain Hastings to work. Parry will be a vast
use here. Send out no mire officers. We have too many of
them. Troops — Artillery corps will be formed immediately:
upon it, others may be grafted. I shall also endeavour, when
in the Morea to get Gubernatis Greek Regt. restored. More
than this can not be effected at present. When the govern
ment has money, they can then take 4,000 choice irregu—lars,
with good officers into their pay. This will give the
government a preponderance, and they can afterwards
act as they shall think fit.

The

The press. I propose to establish a press at the seat of the legislative
body; and I shall have two of the ablest writers to con—duct
it, & the Messalongie one. The Lythagraphie pesses
may be placed at Catalonia, Candia & Athens. I told
Mavo that he was accused of having offered to sell the
Morea to England, and as aspiring as the throne of Greece,
and added that a virtuous man could not be so calum
nailed where the press was free. Yours (signed) Lis.
