Messalougie 28 Decr. 1823
"I have had another hot fight in defence of the
P. Dr. M came to me & said that Bentham's re—marks
on the American press ed not appear un the pros—pectus.
I told him they must or I wd retire from
my connection with him & his papers. It has appeared.
You will judge of the importance of the impression that
this passage must make ib me about to legislate
on the measure & on a people about to stare & wonder
at something new."
17 Jany 1824.
"The press you sent has been made over to Dr SS.
Mayer of Messalougie. The doctor had previously the
us of a press. but it being an indifferent one & belong
ing to the opinate who refused to publish Mr. Bentham's
remarks in the prospectus, I thought it desirable to se—cure
the freedom of writing & publishing by placing our
press in the hands of a bold, honest and intelligent Swiss."
18 Jany 1824
"I have caused many articles on publicity from
Buy Deumont & others to be translated for inser—tion
in the G. Chruo. To give additional weight to these
writings with the ignorant, I have written on the
subject of characters. The following is an exam—ple:
