Minutes of a conversation with Mr Canning —
10 January 1824.The original Written by Mr Bowring, and by him
sent to Mr Bentham at whose desire it was written.
On my entering, M<hi rend="underline">r</hi> C. rose and shook me by the
hand, apologizing for not moving, I have a good deal
of gout yet, tho' I'm better, Take a seat". I said that I
had written to him when he was in the country asking for
an interview on the subject of the Maltese loan — but
that I had also wished to communicate to him viva
voce some information I had received indirectly from the
Duke of Orleans, of language used by Chateaubriand
with respect to him (Mr C.) personally & whatich it might
have been at that time important for him to be acquainted
with — as it was of a most unfriendly character &
at a time when there were external marks of good opinion
between the parties" — Mr C. was much excited by
this — he lifted himself up, & asked when such language
was used". I said, "It was some weeks ago" — on
which he nodded his head significantly.
I then said, that when I before solicited the honor
of an interview I wished to make him master of many extraordinary
facts which the agitation of the loan for the
Knights of S. John had brought to my knowledge — as
I wished to shew him how Russia had been using this
Military Order for carrying into effect her projects of aggrandisement
in Greece & Turkey. I have seen the correspondence
between the Agents of the Order, who were sent
to Verona & Prince Metternich showing that the Sovereigns looked
