J.B. to L.S. in continuation 14 March 1822

Continuation You From the you will
see what sort of terms I am on with the two Envoys.
Supposing me to continue on the like terms I when
my the Const Code is finished, I could do no otherwise than
take every opportunity of consulting them in relation
to it, were it only for the purpose of obtaining such
local information, as I could not obtain otherwise:
indeed there seems to be every occasion for it, and not a
shadow of a
no reason against it. Under these circumstances,
would might it not be a means of forwarding the
business, if a commission in form were given to them
to settle with me the project of a set of Codes — Constitutional
in the first plan — and or one proceeding to the other
Code? penal next as being the simplest, and lastly Distributive
Code commonly called Civil? O. being, as
he takes me on the terms of the strictest intimacy
with M., M at any rate, can
scarcely have any objection to this. I have not determined
with myself, whether to mention it this to them before
it goes, or afterwards, or not at all:
(there is not time for mentioning it to them now:) but
in any case, if the proposal be contested by those whom
it concerns, might it not be of use that if the commission
be given to them O. & L. as above it should be known to them
that the suggestion came from me? To those men
the men where you are might of course add for
this purpose, or substitute, any and as many others
as they pleased, but on my own part I see not at present any reason
for such change: the business might suffer by it, and nothing no advantage
presents itself to my view as likely to be gained by it.
They
They are hot and suspicious
and full of complaints
I believe quite
ungrounded I believe
against their best friend
Bg. but as yet they seem
kindly disposed as well
as full of the most extraordinary
respect as
towards me. Any thing
they disapprove in my look they will give their reasons against, I mean for. This they can not object to. Having no sort of rights, on no occasion whatever do I ever take upon me
to dictate: and so I hope, whether let
the points on which we disagree in opinion be ever
so extensive and numerous, peace and amity will continue.
