Jy. Bentham to Hon. Col. Leicester Stanhope on J.B, correspondence
with the Greek Deputies relative to the disposal of the first Greek Loan.
J.B to L.S. in continuation - 14 March 1824.
From the enclosed you will see what sort of
terms I am on with the two Envoys. Supposing me
to continue on the like terms, when any Conft. Code
is finished, I could do no otherwise than take every
opportunity of consulting them in relation to it, were
it only for the purpose of obtaining such local information,
as I could not obtain otherwise: indeed
this seems to be every reason for it, and no reason
against it. Under these circumstances might it
not be a means of forwarding the business, if a
commission were given in form to them, to settle
with me the project of a set of Codes — Constitutional
in the first place — and so on proceeding
to the other Codes? Penal next as being the simplest,
and lastly Distributive Code commonly called
Civil? O. being as he tells me on the terms
of the strictest intimacy with M. M at any rate can
scarcely have any objection to this. I have not
determined with myself, whether to mention this
to them, before it goes or afterwards, or not at all:
(there is not time for mentioning it to them now:)
