J.B. to Rivadavia
Not very long after the date of this your letter, our
friend William Effingham Lawrence on his way to Van
Diemen's land in a vessel of his own, touched at Rio
de Janeiro, and from thence took what he regarded as
a good opportunity, of conveying to you from thence a
number several of my works, public for published or printed
since your departure from the country. Not having
heard in all this time of these period reaching you, I can form no other conclusion,
that that they must never have been received. He
was upon the most intimate footing with the leading men
in that capital: the principal one Minister included. A forget
The name does not now occur recurr to me, and time is
wanting for the hunting it out by in his Lawrence's letters, which
were most interesting and instructive: amongst other
things he told me that the Minister had over and
over again pledged himself to propose at the meeting
of the Cortes that I should be invited to draw up
a compleat code of laws for them: but for the present
at least, if not for ever, you we all know
but too well be in time different a way that matter
is settled. After insisting, not without hesitation some
very tempting offers that were made him by the then government
to induce him to stay at Rio, he after a delay
of several months he took his departure for Van Diemens
land, where much to his satisfaction he has begun a
settlement, and in a few months his brother Edward is
to go out and join him.
