Their dear father the protector of Greece in the
letter by which I have been addressed am denominated in the numerous letters which
from him I have had occasion to receive from the two
Envoys here. Ah my dear Sir, could you but cut your
yourself into two halves and send one of them to Greece
with the same present as those reserved for Buenos Ayres
some thing might be done: but intellectuality and normalcy
are both of them (I have but too much cause for apprehending)
at a still at last more probable in Greece than in
late Spanish American. No wonder: considering the
debilitating and depraving disposition by which the air
of both countries has for so many centuries been contaminated.
I am At this moment I am putting the tall
hand to the draught of a Constitutional Code: a week I expect will
make it ready for the press. Dr Corsey (a Greek Physician Physician,
resident for these last thirty years at Paris, transl
of Reccaria or Crimea and punishments into modern
Greek, and author of other work, has just engaged to translate it, and get it
printed at Paris: Greek and English, column for column
the whole impression will except a few copies I may get
over here will be sent to Greece by way of Marseilles
He had, in print advanced a publication of his, recommended the translating of my works
into his own language: and in a letter of his, lately
received by the Greek Envoy abovementioned he advises
them to beware of the English An they will come
in contact with here, and not to put confidence
in any person so much as in me.
