Capitains. Of these Odessea is the most influential. His Father
never bowed to the Turks. He was a freeman & a robber.
Odessea was brought up by the famous Tyrant Ali Pasha.
He is shrewd & ambitious. He too has played the Tyrant,
but is now persuaded that the road to fame & wealth is
by pursuing good Govt. He therefore pursues follows this course
& pleases himself supports the people & the republic. Negra
who once signed his a sentence of death against him, is now
his Minister. Of the Maritime Islands Hidra & Spaira
are under the influence of some rich Oligarchs & the rabble,
& Ipscara is fiercly democratick.
The parties May be said to be 3. First there is Macrocordatoa,
the Oligarchs of the Maritime Islands & some of those
of the Pelloponnese. These & the Legislative Body were too few order & a mild despotism,
either under a foreign King or otherwise. This faction
stood high but must now change its principles or loose its
power. 2ly There is Collocotroni & some of the Captains &
Some of the Oligarchs of the Morea who are for power
& plunder. This party is going down hill at a gallop.
And 3ly there is Ipsilanti, Odessea Negra
& the Mass who
are now beginning to embrace republican notions
finding they can not otherwise maintain their power.
Now the question is which of these parties sd an honest
man embrace. And All have stumbled by endeavouring
to bug the best of these factions. I have pursued another
course. Cautiously I have avoided them all. I have
loudly rated them for their vices & have as loudly
