1824 Aug.
Greece. J.B. to Dr Coray Paris

In a word, From all this and much a good deal more, S.'s conclusion
is — that the wishes, and consequent endeavours
of the functionaries are — not in our favour not of Democracy, but of but in favour of a form of
Monarchy under Holy Alliance, in as a form of government
government more favorable to those, in whose hands most
wealth and power, together with pretensions to ancestry, are
at present: and that among persons of that class this is the
general sentiment: in all this how much so ever I see to
afflict me, I see nothing that supposes more than what I had in
a measure I made sure of: but in regard to the
many the hopes are very encouraging.

Of all the leading men, the rival of Agamemnon is the
man of whom, I find the best hopes are entertained: originally
no better than a free booter, he was, it is said for setting up for himself:
but, after a trial regarding that as impracticable,
he is become, a declared convert to the only truly legitimate government, and it is
hoped and a sincere one. To him, I believe, this person
copy of whose letter accompanies this, is attached; or at least at S.s departure was
attached. S. looks upon him as being in respect of legislation
the ablest man in Greece there is. He brought to me from him
that same letter: of which I shall endeavour to get for
Added to the copy of it is the that of an answer: the original is in hand
together with my answer to him which
will go by ready to embark in the Ships Florida which has been for I know
not how long (five or so weeks I believe) on the point of
sailing for Greece. Another letter of you will I hope receive by this
send you opportunity is a copy is one of mine to M. in answer to the two
he sent me by the two Deputies: one an official one in
his character of Secretary to the Executive Government, the other
a private one, recommending these same deputies to my care.
