The necessity of a real and all-comprehensive Code in
contradistinction to the dream called Common
Law, made declared by unauthorized individuals from the decisions
of Judges in individual cases, is now at length making itself
sensible. Codifi In English Codification and to codify, words
of my which at first were objects of ridicule, are
now come into common use, even among public
functionaries. In the Anglo-American United States
the operation itself, to which upon my proposing it there, the
aversion of the people was excited by the lawyer tribe to
which it was whom any clear rule of action is of course an object of abhorrence is begun
to be exemplified. An intention Intentions of this sort have even
been declared in the English Parliament Parliament by the Home Secretary; but the designs
and some advances already made: but the designs of
the ruling few go no further can not in the nature of things go any further than the relieving themselves
and among themselves more particularly the lawyer tribe
from a part of the burthen of Common Law trash,
which is arrived at such a bulk as to have become
intolerable not only to the memory but to the pocket
even of men in that those ranks in life

But being, as I am, an avowed Republican, on
all these occasions as little is taken from me, and as
little said of me, as possible. In the United States, though
I hear from various authentic sources the opinion in relation to
of my labours in the field is already such as my friends wish
and is daily becoming more and more favourable and extensive. In
that sole as yet firmly established seat of
good government, every thing I can produce will therefore have its
fair chance. so that now I am Thus am I in no want of encouragement:
all I stand in need of is a few more years of life together
with such health as in my seventy eighth year I still experience.
