Time not admitting of my revising the copies; and
the hands by which they will have been taken being such
as chance furnished, and all of them unknown to me,
errors, to a greater or less amount, in addition to those in the original, are a little less than
certain consequence: but Valiat quantam valere potest!
Doctor Puigblume, by whom all the translations were made
with the exception of the Propuesta &c (which I have
been told is full of errors, and these material ones,
of some of whether a correction by him will I believe
be found) is a man who by profession and office had made language his
study, and has had time to make himself well acquainted
with the English. He is a most estimable man, was a distinguished member
of the Spanish Cortes, and seconded to with zeal
my unavailing and indeed little less than hopeless endeavour to prevail upon that assembly to give
for the benefit of Spain herself independence to her distant dependencies. He is, without
ceasing occupied in the translation of my Constitutional
Code, as fast as any parcels of it come into his hands.
Of so much as he has of his translation as is already translated made, over and above
what is in print, a copy will I am have been assured, accompany
these pages the other parts, which are in the original English.

By the next conveyance, I hope to send (with
the exception of a small part or two of comparatively little
moment, and which may be as well some months hence
as now) I hope to send what remains requisite for the the remainder of what regards
compilation of the Judiciary Establishment. It is constitutes the
matter of the first Chapter (Chapter of the whole
work): and comprehends whatsoever applies to all
the offices belonging to that department: bearing accordingly
for its title the words "Judiciary collectively." Of the matter of
that
that single Chapter
the quantity is about
the same as that of
all the Chapters which you now see.
