If men could invest upon themselves to give up the idea pf purity
information into the case of omniscience through as many elements as there are replete upon earth mounted upon two legs and embroidered
with feathers, of the self-stiled followers of Jesus could prevail upon their
rules take either than quality and or the quantity of their prayers from either the
practice or the process
those to whom they cry
Lord, Lord—the prayer which
would ever come to be their
trade the idea
quantity of time
and labour expended
in the performance of
one or other of
that duty to God which
is distant from and over above all duty
from which service has in
any shape be reaped
by any person to whom it

be preferable.

Git, Probity and surmounted beneficence, self-regarding prudence—
by these four virtues in so far as they
have place are respectively fulfilled the several corresponding dictates towards
God, towards other men, and towards ourselves.

Security, Subsistence, opulence abundance and equality—by to
these four heads words have been found reducible all the several
subordinate ends belonging appertaining belonging to political economy and the
distributive branch of law:+ security, subsistence, opulence abundance
and equality. But amongst all these objects of worship ends a universal
rivalry and competition has place: seldom can the
interest of any one be compleatly served, be served to the interst but that of the others, some or such of them could
be sacrificed to it.

bounds.

Piety, probity, beneficence, self-regarding prudence(a) as/amongst between those several virtues a competition here may
be seen to have place a competition not less consistent
than between the four ends or objects of distributive law
and political economy above mentioned. In the determining
as often /on the several occasions the/ and in so far as this competition
is seen to have place, in determining the to which one
understands to the others, the preference is due consists
all every practical lesson that can serve for the direction
of human conduct. Not less fatal to the existence of the
human race would beneficence be if pursued to excess, their
self-regarding prudence.

☞ Add in this Catechism, nothing is said of Duty to ourselves. True
it is that in this case the word duty compared with those others the sense in which the word duty is rather employed is rather a figurative than the proper sense
if it be true in as much that it is in the nature of in every objection may be for whose benefit it is has been imposed. But howsoever it is we regard the duty self-regarding from the title of virtue is by common consent and the less done by
prudence against self-regarding
prudence.
