Morals Definition
1
Ethics what
Ethics, Morals, or Moral Philosophy is [the science
which teaches] the art of attaining happiness
Moral Philosophy may be considered on the part of
a learner or of a teacher
2
— considered on the
part of a learner
On the part of a learner it is the art of attaining
happiness
3
— on the part of
a teacher
On the part of a teacher it is the art of leading a man
to happiness by shewing him how to conduct himself
upon every occasion in such manner as to obtain whatever measure
of happiness his natural faculties and the situation
of life in which he happens to find himself be placed (understand
at the commencement of his entrance into the study) qualify him
to obtain.
4
Relation of this
to other arts
Each particular art is the art of obtaining a certain
measure of happiness in a particular way — i:e:
as far as depends upon the practice of that particular
art
Ethics is the art of obtaining the greatest attainable share of happiness in all manner
of ways and upon all the several occasions
that can occur to a man.
5
Education a branch
of Ethics — respecting
the conduct of minors
The art of education is a branch of Ethics
It is the art of pointing out the methods by which
the conduct of persons within which it is necessary for
their happiness that their conduct be subject to the regulation
of others may be so-regulated as for them to be
conducted each to the attainment of the highest measure
of happiness which his natural faculties and the situation
of life in which he is placed qualify him to obtain.
Education should precede the rest of Ethics at large: because every
man is young before he is old.
