Definition being universal acknowledged in the character
of the great instrument of pneumatic clarification
when either for the purpose of explanation instruction or controversy
a man is determined to be clear, he lays takes
hold in hand of some word or words in which the essence
of the matter subject seems to him to be lodged and attacks takes
to it what something that presents itself to him in
the character of a definition. Unfortunately not
so most commonly, after taxing his wits to the utmost,
what he finds he refers or if he does not others find
for him is that after the pains thus bestowed upon
the subject it is if any thing less clear than before.

subject is found to be
less intelligible than

This always has been and always will be the case
The only sort of discourse mode of exposition commonly understood
by the word definition being is that which by the Aristotelians
once called definition per genus et differentiam
—an exposition which is performed by naming the
class or genus of objects to within which that which is designated
by the term thus undertaken to be defined
is included, and therefore some circumstance or other
by which the contents of this lesser class are considered as being distinguished
from the whole remainder all the other contents of the greater and containing
class.
