Logic or Deontology Ch Well being §.5. Summum bonum

Eyes shut against all experience.
Summum bonum no more exits than Common Law.

§.5. Summum bonum — the notion of its existence absurd and mischievous
§.5. Notion of the existence of a summum bonum — its absurdity
and mischievousness

Wherein consists The summum bonum, wherein does
it exist? Such was the question debated by multitudes
debated from generation to generation by men calling themselves
lovers of wisdom, and by others wise

When The summum bonum wherein does it consist?
In this nonsensical question is implied an
ass of the existence of a something corresponding to
and designated by this name

The summum bonum — the sovereign good wherein
does it consist? The philosophers stone, the thing
that turns all metals into gold, the thing that cures
disease in all its shapes — in what quarry is it to be
found? Upon the same level in the seats of rationality
stand both these questions

It consists in virtue it consists in this and that and
t'other: it consists in any thing rather than in pleasure
It is the Irish ap Irishmans applessic which was to be
made of nothing but of quinces

What was This bonum what would it be if it were
any thing? What would it be if it had any thing in it
of or belonging to pleasure — Would it be pleasure in the character of an the effect
or it would be a something an unknown something considered
as the its cause of pleasure?

This supreme or sovereign good the one supposition is that
it whatever it is in is it the degree in which it is that
is the highest degree: whatever it is it is to be the in the of every man who is
in possession of it

one
and the same thing at all times and in all places. This
non tangible thing where is it to be in what one individual man in what act
individual place in what one individual atom of time was it ever to be found. What
fool

fool ever has there been
so foolish in all
to and by in no
man by no man, at no place, at no time was it ever to be has it ever been found
