1. Private good pursued at expense of greater to the individual
2. His own private good pursued at the expense of the equivalent evil
to some one else, and thence alternately to himself
§. 3. If it can not ever cease to be, then what can
ever be the use of this or that or any other discourse on
any point of the field of Ethics?
Answer. Use the 1st 2. To shew him, that, howsoever conducive
to his well being according to his then present view of it
the conduct which otherwise he might be disposed to pursue
might be appear to him to be present itself to him as being it is will not, on
a cool and comprehensive view be seen to be so in effect as the upshot
inasmuch as the present or other nearer good by the prospect
of which he would be determined so to do, would be
outweighed by evil a mass of evil preponderant in value
Answer Use the 2d. If so it be that by the practice of the act line of conduct
in question the effect will is more or less likely to prove
preponderant to that whole interests of or of this or that portion of the
society in which he lives — that in sustaining this which they sustain prejudice evil
the quarter source evil in this shape from which and the from whom it comes will be visible to
their eyes, and that accordingly were it only by the
principle of self preservation, they will be stand engaged to in some way shape or other
avenge wreak sub their vengeance upon the author for the injury which they regard themselves
as having thus sustained
Answer the 3d. To If so it be that with or without
reason the species of conduct in question is on the
minds breasts of a portion more of less considerable of the community
productive of displeasure, and thence of damage
in some shape or other determinate or indeterminate
to himself this man, to bring before his view by way of warning
the tendency of the mode practice of conduct to become productive
of this effect.
