Logic or Ethics Ch. Summum bonum
1 §2 1 Platonists & Academics
Two things there were about which the Alchemists a set of physical philosophers
of later times were agreed: that there exists existed a universal
medium somewhere and that it was capable discoverable findable and that it was
somewhere to be found. About One thing they were their agreement
was not quite so perfect: that was, whereabouts it was to
be found.
Two things in like manner the moral philosophers in
question were agreed about: that a summum bonum exists
somewhere existing, and that it is somewhere findable: but as to
the where, in this case too there was [the place matter and] the source
of difference.
I. The idea of good — this was according to one set the summum bonum: or
Ell. Compared Com.p.9
what comes to much the same thing, that is to much the
same nonsense in this idea it was that the summum
bonum was to be found. This being true, you then, whoever
you are, if whenever as soon as you have no sooner have you got the summ
idea of good than you have the summum bonum: and having
it you are happier — happier by it is not easy to
say how much than the happiest man that of all men who have not yet got it:
and but as to what you will have are to do with it when you
have got it what you will have are to do with it, that [is
what] you will know it is time enough for you to know, when you have got it.
In this view of the matter two sets of Philosophers
were agreed viz the Platonists and the Academics: the
Platonists including of course the master manufacturer
of nonsense, from whom they took their nonsense and their
name.
