Requiring to be given up pleasures which neither ought to be nor
ever ought to be given up, they discredit the disprove the practical
utility of books and of morality, and confirm men in the notion that
bad morals are all that are fit for practice, good ones only for discourse and parade
hence hypocrisy.
2 4. Misapplication of religion.) False morality can now be cultivated but at the expence of true.

Next to the use and application of the false principles
of morality, viz asceticism of and sentimentalism,
may be comes ranked the misapplication of religious principles
Religion is misapplied how can it be otherwise?
in proportion as it is applied to any part of the field of
morals.
Applied in conformity to the principle of utility
it is needless and useless: applied in opposition to
that sole guardian of ha temporal felicity it is
pernicious.
