Logic Deontology
Ch. Pleasures of Amity

6

Here then as in every part of the field of commerce
prudence self-regarding prudence, acts in opposite dire
according to circumstances acts in opposite directions: prescribing
expenditure in as far as it promises to be attended
with more than equivalent profit: inhibiting on all occasions its advance beyond
that line.

15
Here as in commerce
prudence

prescribes expenditure
when attended
with profit —
when not — inhibits it.

That in this case as in every other propriety inhibits the exercise as well of
benevolence beneficence as of self regarding prudence alone al their
exercise can not be performed without a breach in the
virtue of probity, has all along in every instance been observed, and with
precise instance its b mention remembrance of it is sufficient in
the present instance.

16
Propriety
The exercise
of beneficence as
well as prudence
where probity must
be violated here also
improper.

Of the restraining forces capable of applying
to this case remains that of self-regarding prudence?

But in this case as in every other case the dictates of self regarding prudence what
are they? they are the result by what are they determined?
— by the balance of an accrual which has as it
many separate heads as there are species of pleasure
and species of pains. On every account without exception With few or no exceptions
prudence supposes and requires the sacrifice of pleasure
and simptions on the one hand to pleasures and simptions
on the other. Contr On every occasion pleasure
and security in one shape are liable to find their rivals
in pleasure and security in some other shape or shapes.

17
Prudence determined
by balance
of pleasures and
pains.
it always requires
sacrifice of rival
pleasures on one
hand to do on the
other.
