First on to motives which by simple indication
and without doing anything towards the creation of
them it may be in my power to bring to bear upon
the point in question and thereby upon the occasion
give employ them in to giving direction to conduct.

It is not by no otherwise
than by the expectation entertained of it that by
pleasure or pain in any shape, direction can be given
to human conduct. But to either it may happen
and frequently does happen to take place without
being expected. If then in the science in which question
it happens to to behold d a probability of its
taking place in a in which it is not expected,
in this case by raising the expectation I may
exercise the same influence as I could would could be
exercised by me if instead of the same from which
by the supposition it will flow, it had been
from any will that it had done to flow
