Deontology Ch. 1
and although this motive belongs to the class of
those which are generally regarded with approbation
and which in proportion to the influence
which they are supp regarded as exercising over a
man's conduct are regarded as entitling him to the
affection and respect of his fellow men yet on the
present occasion for as much as by the exercise of
it in the manner and in the direction in question
nothing of self denial is necessitated, no
sacrifice of self-regarding interest to the interest of
others required there need be no great difficulty
in supposing at any rate for the argument sake
that such has all along been the motive to which
the work has been indebted for its existence
That on each occasion by each person that
which is in the highest degree conducive to the
happiness of the whole shall be done that is the
end which I have all along in view and for the
accomplishment of which I am in this way all
along arcing/useing my endeavours. But for the accomplishment
of this wish what are the means
I have before me? Answer — the following, and
no other: viz — such considerations as when brought
to the view of the several agents in question
may in the character of motives have the effect
of causing them respectfully respectively to adopt & pursue
that course of conduct which shall be
in the highest degree conducive to the general
end above indicated.
