Ch. 1 Definitions &c

§.1.Virtues & Vices

Here for accurate conception concerning happiness
and its ingredients pleasure and exemption from pain, make
reference to the Springs of Action

On the occasion of the act in question

On the occasion of the act in question+, either the
+ In a Note mention the
distinction between positive
and negative acts

agent himself is considered as the only person whose
happiness is affected by it, or it is considered as
producing a tendency to produce an effect more or less
considerable upon the happiness of some other individual
or individuals

In the first case virtue is and vice are considered in a purely
self regarding point of view: it is the virtue of the
unconnected individual. In the other case it is considered also
in an extra-regarding point of view: it is the virtue
of a member of society — of human society.

And so in the case of vice.

When In so far as virtue is considered in no other than a
self-regarding point of view, as above, among the
consequences of liable to be produced by the act in question these alone are
considered to the production of which no act on
the part of any individual other than himself is
necessary.

In so far as it is considered in an extra regarding
point of view, two sets of consequences, either or both
may be contemplated considered as being liable to become the results
of it: viz 1. consequences affecting the happiness of other
individuals; and 2. consequences, which, affecting his own happiness
are the results of some act produced by the his act in question this or that
on his act on the part of this or that some other individual or
individuals, produced by that act of his which is in question.+

Either the happiness of
the agent alone or of others
may be affected by the act

If the happiness of
the agent alone is
affected, the virtue
is said to be purely
self-regarding

If the happiness of
others be concerned, it
is called Extra-regarding
— And so in
the case of Vice —

As far as Virtue is
considered as merely
self-regarding, those
consequences alone of
the act are considered
which in the production
of which no other than
the individual himself
was concerned —

In so far as Virtue is
considered as Extra-regarding
2 sets of consequences
must be considered —
1 those affecting the happiness
of others —
2 the consequences of which
tho' affecting his own happiness
are are the results all
of acts of other or others induced
by his own original act —
