§. 1. Virtues & Vices

Though when there is no utility usefulness either in act or tendency
there is no virtue, utility does not of itself and by itself
it is manifest constitute virtue: an act may to any degree
degree be a useful one, without being and not be a virtuous one.

It may be an absolutely necessary one: the individual act necessary to the existence of the an individual
the species of act necessary to the existence of the whole species: and still there may be no virtue in it.

drinking is in the one
case: the act of procreation
is the other.

To give to a useful act the character of a virtuous
one it is therefore necessary that in the production of it
something of effort shall have been employed: employed
in the production either of the individual act in question,
or of a correspondent habit and disposition of which
it is the result.

Virtue may be said to consist of to be manifested in so far as a sacrifice made
of the lesser to the greater good in a case cases in which on the
part of mankind in general the sacrifice is attended with
more or less difficulty.
