The distinction — its uses

The distinction between prudence & benevolence — self-regarding
prudence & efficient benevolence is the very sun of moral
science. By it light is substituted to darkness, order to chaos, every
where The most intricate problems are solved by it; the most
perplexing difficulties vanish before it. By it alone can be traced
out the connections, from it alone can be deduced the relations,
between the several other classes of moral entities. By it alone
can be traced out the limits between virtue & vice: between virtue &
virtue, between vice & vice. By it & by it may by it alone can all anomalies
be reduced to regularity. By it & by it alone, may be brought into
connection with virtue & vice, a number of moral entities which
as yet have stood in the field in a disparate & as it were insulated
state. witness ambition Witness pride and vanity, witness friendship: witness veracity
and mendacity.
