Deontology Private
J. B; Intellectual faculties
Relation of the modifications of the intellectual faculty
(for example to as enumerated by J. B. in Chrestomathia)
to Virtue and Vice and then to Deontology
They belong to deontology in so far as a beneficent or maleficent direction
is capable of being given by the will to the exercise
of them: and in so far as (a beneficent the direction
given to them being beneficial) it is in the power of
the will to add to the degree of their spoken force.
Thus the faculty of invention belongs to the understanding,
is an intellectual faculty. But accordingly
as it is applied to good or bad beneficent or maleficent purposes it is though
not itself either a virtue or a vice, an instrument in
the either of virtue or of vice.
