In J. B's mind the
word utility synonim us
with happiness principle
owing to the use made
of it by Hume, & Helvetius
also Horace.

No wonder that in Mr Bentham's mind the word utility
became originally, and for so great a length of time continued to
be associated with the idea at present expressed to
"the greatest happiness principle

The work of Hume and Helvetius were, as also
those by which the idea was originally planted in his mind. But
v passages of classical written
were eagerly embraced as they happened to pass to themselves
and contributed to hold by it

Utility, just says Horace: by these words
this principle was last as furnishing the
of morals and judicature. Noli utile est quod
est gloria
says somewhere.
