Polit. Deontology
Wisdom of our ancestors – What is the acknowledgement
made by him who makes use of this phrase?
What but that be and thus who thinks or rather whose opinion or rather talk
with him whose discourse agrees with his are so many fools, incapable of forming
a judgment for themselves.
Of this an acknowledgement to this effect what is
the practical result? that they should each of them hold their be
tongue or their his pen whichsoever be the instrument
of which he is making so miserable a use.
These wise ancestors of ours who are they?
Men who in the first place had not never had before them
that in the shape in which we have it before us,
the question that lies before us; in the next place
men who for their guidance had neither the exper
neither had any stock of experience equal to that
which we are in possession of did as but venture
to make use of it – nor had possessed in any degree
so ample as to possess it the stock of liberty necessary
to any now putting that experience to use.
Yes. If either experience be necessary to wisdom
or liberty to the faculty of making use of it – wisdom
of ancestors is a contradiction in terms self contradictory locution, any proposition
asserting the existence of it a self-contradictory
proposition as well might one say the
brilliancy of darkness, the opulence of penury
the liberty of thraldom.
(a) The most obstinate are they who have no opinion of their own: who
are governed by authority and not by "reason", not being governed by real
reason has no application to them and is therefore lost upon them.
