Polit. Deontology
Accordingly by opposite consideration be is two opposite being different
classes descriptions of persons and for correspondently opposite reasons the principle thus when denominated has
found a disposition correspondently very unfavourable to the acceptance of
it.
1. In the one of those the light character in which case it has presented itself as is that of a rigid scale of action putting
an exclusion upon pleasure – or at any rate upon
present pleasure. Pleasure is an end and of the two
classes of ends viz. pleasure and exemption from pain
the only one the contemplation of which is attended with
annext and present pleasure. Utility By the word
utility the idea excited is that of subserviency in the
character of a means: but the idea excited by the
words ends and means is not identical but distinct contradistinct
and in so far mutually exclusive.
With To this if persons utility in any object
gives it the character of an unacceptable one: unacceptable
viz. as being putting an exclusion upon the
idea of present pleasure. Under the virtue of these being
useful to him many disagreeable objects is admission
wont to be given? The relation of the useful to the agreeable
is in this case regarded as the relation which has place,
between and those indulgences by which the
demand for is produced.
A certain body of quality there was once – nor is the
story a feigned one – in to whose eyes the principle of utility
never presented itself but with a repulsion aspect. Why?
Because pleasure – present pleasure was an object so dear to her as to have
obtained extorted from her some not inconsiderable unimportant use altogether
sacrifices. To this therefore The principle of utility was a bug-bear. Why?
because it never presented itself in her imagination but with a
in its mouth, directed against present the most exquisite of present pleasures.
