§. Influence

So prodigious is the importance of So much depends upon the object as designated by for in the designation of which
this word is employed – so dark nebulous is the ambiguity of the
import attached to this word – that a thorough develo the labour necessary to
the most compleat development exposition of it that can be given words can give of it
will be well paid for by the advantage profit.

☞ After distinguishing influence as that which applies to the
will and that which applies to the understanding – and that the influence here in question
is that which applies
to the will, it is as
follows.

The standard to which the import of it as requires to
be compared is that of the word power.

In the import of the word power are involved two
ideas: the principal one is that of i.e. of
the certainty of the effect to the prediction of which it is directed:
the other is that of the incapacity of effectual resistance
on the part of the subject to on which it is applied exercised. Hence in

1. Where In so far as the word influence is employed the that idea of
that certainty which is considered as having place in the
case where the word power is employed or excluded.

2. So likewise the idea of the unlimitedness of the
punishment the terrific the coercive force.

Irresistible influence With the above exposition how

Thus the influence of
One of
Among the most common
applicati
subjects in cases in which
it is most frequently
applied is that of the sexual influence – influence exercised by the beauty of the weaker softer over the stronger sex.
