§. Effective Benevolence – its pleasures, how far new

In the history of the life of one of the Imperial Roman tyrants as narrated reported
delineated
by Suetonius a premium is mentioned as having been offered
by him to him who should invent a new source of pleasure.

By it is not remembered what moralist – not improbable probably by a multitude
of such moralists, this endeavour howsoever ineffectual to add
to the aggregate mass of human enjoyment is numbered among the
most obvious of the tyrants crimes.

In all every aggregate of human-beings to a certain
degree civilized – in every metropolis in particular, the premium
to an indefinite amount directed to the like object, are perpet
virtually in a state of perpetual advertisement. Of this sort To this head belong
example all theatrical exhibitions: all exhibitions the of
objects by the rarity of which the desire of obtaining perception
of them is excited.

The tyrant in question being more sure a sensualist
and a sensualist so taking in a more particular for the source of the gratification enjoyment
the operations of the sexual organs. it what seems to have been taken assumed
for granted by these moralists take for granted is that it was from
that sense in particular that it was the desire or expectation
of the advertiser or at any rate from some source of the
pleasures of sense that the desired new pleasure should be derived.

In China for example a mode it is is in practice
of procuring deriving, by titillation applied in a particular manner, for
the organs of sight and hearing respectively a pleasurable sensation
of the purely physical kind over and above those pleasures of a
mixt kind of which in the practice of that will as other countries
they are the inlets or the .

If it there be in Europe unknown pleasure is not attended
sooner or later with pain to a preponderant amount no rational objection can
be alledged applied to the use of it. The interest that in that case can
be and against it is – that it is not a social pleasure: that by
one and the same act no power more than or greater number of persons than
one can the pleasure
produced at the same time.
But in the respect is it
no one
