Ancient Learning is the store house of Wit; the treasury of superficial
resemblances. It is modern learning. Science, that is the mind from
whence materials for new inventions in science are to be extracted, from whence
articles of nomenclature are to be drawn adapted to characterise there new
combinations which constitute the improvements that are made in the theory of
the sciences. A Law is an integrant part of the body of Jurisprudence.
The parts or different sorts of matter into which a Law is divisible are the
constituent parts of such an integrant. The nomenclature by which this
observation is conceived and stands perpetuated is taken from Chymestry. Tis
not Homer, Horace, Virgil nor Tibullus, – tis not all the furniture of a whole
Christchurch Library that would have furnished it.
