The Official value of the Imports into France, is about 20 Millions
Sterling, and the Duty received, averages nearly 4 Millions, or 20 per
Cent in the value. The official estimate of the Imports into
Great Britain, is 44 Millions, producing to the Revenue nearly
20 Millions, – or, nearly 48 pr Cent on the value. If, therefore,
the Imports into France were as productive as those of England,
instead of 4 Millions, they would produce 9 1/2 Millions; – and if
the consumption of foreign articles were as great, and the Duties
could be collected to the same extent in France as in England,
the amount would be nearly 20 Millions.*
