Fiat experientia was the axiom of Bacon – an axiom which
has been at last recognized as the foundation of all pure philosophy genuine science.
Fiat observatio, is Bentham's apophthegm. What experiment is to
the philosopher, observation is to the moralist. Bentham has looked examined
to human actions through the pleasures they and pains which are consequent
upon them, All and has grounded all his reasonings are grounded upon this examination. In
such pursuit truth can hardly have escaped him – for truth & utility
must go together hand in hand together – & he who discovers what is
useful cannot be far off from that which is true. It is in
fact more easy to overtake truth by pursuing utility, – than to
follow reach truth at all without utility for a guide – since that which is useful is
matter of experience while conjecture that a conjecture is busied with in
asking What is Truth?
